Abacos Travel Guide: Getting There and Getting Around

How to reach the Abacos in the northwest Bahamas by private flight, scheduled air, or sea, and how to get around by ferry, rental car, and golf cart.

By Velox Jets2 min read

The Abacos are a chain of islands and cays stretching about 120 miles in the northwest Bahamas. Most visitors arrive by air into Marsh Harbour or Treasure Cay, or by boat, then get around by ferry, rental car, or golf cart. The islands are known for long beaches, clear water, small settlements, and some of the best boating in the region.

If you've only visited Nassau, the Abacos offer a different side of the Bahamas. The "Out Islands" (also called the Family Islands) are quieter, without the large casinos and high-rise resorts of the capital.

Abaco was severely affected by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, and recovery has continued since. Before you travel, confirm that hotels, restaurants, ferries, and other services you plan to use are operating.

Getting to the Abacos

By private aircraft

Most visitors arriving by air use Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (MHH) in Marsh Harbour. Treasure Cay Airport (TCB) is a smaller option for private aircraft, and there are additional small airstrips around the islands. From South Florida, the flight is short and well suited to a turboprop or light jet.

Private flights from the United States must clear Bahamas customs and immigration at an airport of entry, and passengers need valid passports. Your operator handles the flight paperwork for both directions. Our Bahamas destination guide covers the documents and routing in more detail.

By scheduled flight

Scheduled flights serve Marsh Harbour from Florida and from Nassau. Flight times from Florida vary by departure city.

By private boat

Abaco's waters draw boaters from all over. If you enter the Bahamas by private vessel, you must clear customs and immigration at an authorized port of entry, with valid passports for everyone aboard and the required Bahamas customs and immigration forms.

By ferry or mailboat

Passenger ferries and mailboats have long connected Nassau with the Abacos. Schedules change, so check current routes and times with the operators before planning around them.

Getting around the Abacos

Taxis

Taxis meet scheduled flights at Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay, but booking transportation in advance is still a good idea. Most taxis are minivans that can carry four adults with luggage.

Ferries between the cays

Ferries link mainland Abaco with the outlying cays, including Green Turtle Cay. Check the current schedule locally before you go.

Rental cars

Car rentals are available in Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay, useful for exploring mainland Abaco or making day trips.

Golf carts

Golf carts are the most popular way to get around the Abaco Cays and Treasure Cay, which is on the mainland.
