Colorado's best-known ski resorts sit deep in the Rockies, often two to four hours' drive from Denver in good conditions. Flying directly into a mountain airport can turn that into a short transfer. Here are four resorts, and the airports that serve them.
1. Aspen Snowmass
Aspen Snowmass is four separate mountains with one lift ticket: Aspen Mountain above town, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass, the largest. Between them there's terrain for every level, and Aspen itself has some of the best dining and shopping in the Rockies.
Airport: Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE), about three miles from town. At 7,820 feet, with mountains close on every side, it's one of the more demanding airports in the country, and not every aircraft or crew can operate there. Weather can close it quickly, so trips sometimes divert to Eagle County or Grand Junction.
Plan ahead for 2027: ASE will be closed from April 4 to November 19, 2027 for runway reconstruction. The 2026–27 ski season isn't affected. See aspenairport.com for updates.
2. Beaver Creek
A few miles west of Vail, Beaver Creek is known for its polished village, service touches like the afternoon cookies, and well-groomed, uncrowded runs. Vail is close enough for a day on its back bowls.
Airport: Eagle County Regional (EGE), roughly 30 minutes from Beaver Creek and Vail.
3. Steamboat
Steamboat is known for its light, dry "Champagne Powder" snow and its tree skiing. The town of Steamboat Springs is a working ranching community with hot springs, restaurants and a relaxed Western feel.
Airport: Yampa Valley Regional (HDN) in Hayden, about 25 miles west of Steamboat.
4. Copper Mountain
In Summit County near Frisco and Vail Pass, Copper Mountain's terrain is naturally divided by difficulty, with easier runs on the west side and steeper terrain to the east, which makes it easy for mixed-ability groups to find their way. Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail are all within a short drive.
Airport: Eagle County (EGE) is the closest airport for most private flights; Denver-area airports are an option when mountain weather or aircraft size rules out EGE.
Flying privately to Colorado ski country
Mountain airports are high, the weather changes quickly and peak holiday weeks are busy. A few things help:
- Choose the right aircraft. High elevations and short winter days affect performance. Your advisor will match the aircraft to the airport, often a midsize or super midsize jet for groups with ski gear.
- Book holiday weeks early. Christmas, New Year's and Presidents' Day weekends fill up at ASE and EGE.
- Build in flexibility. Read how weather affects private jet flights, including winter operations at Aspen.
